When it comes to potential, Tales of Seikyu is an absolute 10/10 game! As I write this, the game is still in early access, but what is here is fantastic, and even though there is not a ton of content in this first release. I have looked at the roadmap for the game, and they have some amazing stuff planned here. This game has it all, charming visuals, interesting characters, varied gameplay, and I can honestly see this becoming a massive hit, if the developer can get it over the finishing line.
No Watch In This Yokai Town!
How often do you get to reference Yokai Watch? Although that reference is very fitting as the characters of Tales of Seikyu are yokai who live in a lovely little place that is away from human eyes. Here, the characters can be in human or yokai form as they live their very best life. The idea of the game is that we are part of a clan that can turn into all kinds of yokai, and we are trying to find the secrets of our family history, but we are also looking for love and to make a life for ourselves in this charming little place. It has a very wholesome vibe about it, albeit with a hint of mystery as well.
Making The Best Of This Great Life
The developer mentions games like Rune Factory and Fields of Mistria when it came to the inspiration for Tales of Seikyu, and that is very obvious once you start playing the game. This is a life-sim/farming type of game where you need to grow your food, go on adventures, find a partner, and so on. You can embark on many quests, and from what I understand, more and more will be added. At the moment, there is not a ton of stuff to actually do in the game and most of what I have bene doing has been messing with my farm, however, as I said in the intro, the potential here is massive and there is a huge twist that this game has which I think is going to be what really wins people over.
The Power of Yokai!
The whole nature of this game is changed because of the fact that you can use Yokai powers in Tales of Seikyu. When I saw the trailer, I saw that you could turn into a slime to look underwater, and you could turn into a bird so that you could fly. However, it was the way that instead of just using a watering can to water your crops, you could turn into a Yokai and blast them with water that way. There is also combat in the game, and once again, turning into a yokai can help you here. At the moment, there are just a few transformations, but they are implemented pretty well.
A Step Above The Rest
What initially blew me away here was the visuals. I have played a ton of games that offer a similar gameplay experience to what Tales of Seikyu does (without the yokai gimmick, of course); however, this is easily one of the best-looking games of this genre I have seen. The game has a very bright and vibrant art style, and I love the character designs. It is awesome how you have human like characters and then the creative looking yokai versions of them too. It is all very well done, and even though the developer is working on the game as I write this, I do think that they have all the assets mostly in place. I liked how varied this little town was, and exploring was a lot of fun. I use the term charming all of the time, but there is truly no better way to describe the look of this game.
You may think that the score I have given this game is high for something that is still in pretty early access as I write this, but I think it is very deserving, even though it is a little lacking in content. Tales of Seikyu is very fun, I loved the whole yokai gimmick, and I am very excited for more characters, events, yokai, and quests to be added to the game. Granted, I have done all the main stuff that there is to do, but I am having a hell of a lot of fun screwing around exploring and keeping my crops growing just right.
Pros:
- I loved being able to change into a yokai
- There are some quirky and interesting characters
- This game has a ton of wholesome charm
- The roadmap promises a ton of regular content
Cons:
- The game is still in early access as I write this
- The early access build does not have a ton of content

Game Reviews
Tales of Seikyu is a business simulator that is unlike anything you may have seen before. An entire small town, where a settlement of yokai is conveniently located, does not accept mere mortals into its abode. Every day the settlement is in danger from the old gods' influence on nature and the powers of the Yokai. You have been entrusted to care for the new god Inari's abode and its territories. Use your granted mimicry powers and conquer the air, land and water in your mystical guises. But don't forget about running your business, of course.
Pros of the game:
- Three forms to deal with daily challenges
- Open world to explore and battle
