As soon as I saw the interesting art style that Sugar Service had, I knew that this was a game I had to play! This is a very entertaining game that may not be perfect, but I found it still to be a fun time, and there was something about it that kept me coming back. It has dating sim elements, management, and it is held together with this rather interesting card game. This is a game that I knew as I was playing it, needed just a little bit of tightening up, but I still could not stop playing it!
Rent Is Due!
The story of Sugar Service was something that I found to be a great deal of fun. We play as a young guy and we have just lost our job! With our backs against the wall and the need to find money to pay the rent, we team up with our friend, and we decide that we will start an escort service as well as a camgirl agency and this will be a great way to make some quick cash and also have a little bit of fun at the same time. I do not know why, but this just clicked with me right from the start
A Girl For Every Guy
There are several girls in Sugar Service, and I think that they did a good job of creating a diverse bunch of characters. For example, you have Lilith, who is a goth chick, and she was my favorite; there is Juliet, who is a gamer; Willow is a cool skater chick; Linora is an otaku, and Maggie is a chill gardener. Each girl is fun to talk to, but I think they could have added a bit more depth to the characters, as their “hobby” is their main characteristic, and they never really go all that much deeper than that if I am being 100 percent honest. Still, with that being said, it was fun getting to know each of the girls.
Love Is In The Cards
Sugar Service is the kind of game that loves to overexplain things to you! The UI takes a while to get used to, as pretty much everything is open to you from the start, so there is a lot of clicking around menus to get where you need to go. You need to pair the right girl up with the right job, but you also need to get to know and date the girls. There is a stat system you need to build up and you do this via a card game, they go into great details about this card game, but the basics of it are that it is like a paper, scissors, rock type thing where certain cards beat other cards and once you get your head around this, that is it. You will be spending most of your time grinding to get card packs, and I would recommend dedicating a good 20 minutes or so to this, and you will have a much easier time playing through the game.
Digging The Vibe
I think what kept me hooked and wanting to keep on playing Sugar Service was the visuals. The game has a very hand-drawn, early 2000s MTV animated show vibe about and that is something I really liked. Each of the girls is cute in their own way, and while the UI may be a tad on the clunky side, I dug what they were going for here. You are rewarded with fun sex scenes with each of the ladies, and these are animated. Not only that, but this game actually has some voice acting, which I thought was pretty well done and helped make the rather one-dimensional characters seem a bit more real, if that makes sense.
I think if they had not tried and make the card game seem deeper than it was, Sugar Service would have been a much better game for it. I liked this and thought that it was fun, but with just a little bit more work, it could have been great and not just good. Still, even though there was some grinding and I found that somethings were overexplained to the point where it was making me kind of mad, I wanted to keep on playing this as I found all of the chicks to be easy on the eyes and while it was rather shallow, I liked how each one had something that they were super passionate about.
Pros:
- There are some fun characters
- I thought that the art style was a great deal of fun
- The card mini game has a lot of potential and is pretty easy
- There was a real addictive quality about this game that kept me playing
Cons:
- The characters could have been fleshed out a bit more
- Despite what the game tries to make you think, the card game is very easy and random
