The title would suggest a conference seminar for white-collar workers to be bored for an entire weekend. However, apparently Speed Challenge: Jacques Villeneuve's Racing Vision is a game. Forgive me for my ignorance, but I am not aligned with the history of Formula One racing, nor do I know who this man is.

Upon research, Jacques Villeneuve is a successful Canadian racer and also an amateur musician. It appears that developers decided to base a game around his racing achievements rather than his musical ones. That's probably for the best. But anyway, here we have a non-franchised racing game where I have no idea what to expect. This could be interesting!

Frere Jacques, Dormez-Vous?

Here's where the concept gets intriguing. Speed Challenge: Jacques Villeneuve's Racing Vision is based on what the man in the title thought racing will be like in 2027 - or his racing vision (go figure). Do you feel they could have thought of a better title for this game instead of something that makes you take a breath between divulging it?

So, what does the future hold for racing in this game, then? Nothing has fundamentally changed about Formula One driving. That is except that all the cars are driven remotely rather than in the vehicle. That means that everything looks the same, feels the same, and controls the same. This is a clone of a Formula One game - not a futuristic vision.

But does it drive well in the future? Nope, it actually feels worse. There's room for poetic license to think that cars are more poorly made in 2027, but the real reason is this game has shoddy development all over. The controls feel stiff, the reaction times are dull, and each track just feels clunky. If this is what the future holds for racing, you'd be better off without it.

What is the most niggling aspect of this game as a whole? It's an intriguing concept that does nothing to deliver. What's racing going to be like in the future? I'd like to know, but this game is simply not going to tell you. It's going to laugh in your face for purchasing such a below-average racing game. While it's not entirely broken, it's obnoxious to think of that notion when grinding through the racetrack.

One Man, One Vision

There are some palatable elements of the game despite the generally poor delivery. Tinkering with your cars in the garage can be pretty fun, as well as leveraging a slightly better-designed damage system. But all in all, Speed Challenge: Jacque Villeneuve's Racing Vision misses the mark by quite far. The ambition is there - the delivery is not.

If you're intrigued by the concept of futuristic racing, it would seem developers could shape a better experience. Even average offerings like Antigraviator have more appeal than this dull-edged blade. We won't take too much away from it, considering there are moments of decency, but it just doesn't strike a chord both in gameplay and ideas.

Pros:

  • Tinkering with your car is fun in the garage
  • A different kind of concept from the usual racing game
  • Real-world tracks

Cons:

  • Driving physics don't feel right
  • Controls to the cars are stiff
  • Reaction times don't align with real-life driving
