Shaq Fu

Long ago and far away, in a place called The Second World, there--ruled the heartless sorcerer Sett Ra. A hunger for power still gnawed at him even though his dominance over The Second World was unchallenged, He longed to extend his grasp to the fair First World, Earth.

Sett Ra's plan was simple. He would destroy the Pharaoh of Egypt and usurp his throne. He created a perfect assassin from his own shadow who would serve him without question. This shadow became Beast, the mightiest and most loyal of all Sett Ra's minions.

All is ready for the final battle-only the Chosen One can stop Sett Ra now. One who possesses strength, spirituality, courage, agility, intelligence, and unsurpassed skill in the martial arts. Where will the world find such a one? Only Shaq knows.

NBA fans will get to see what it's like to be Shaquille O'Neal and do more than just slam a basketball.

There aren't enough characters to choose from and the ones that are here aren't anything great.

The control of each character seems to lag at times especially when jumping.

  • Machine: SNES
  • Manufacturer: Electronic Arts.

With characters smaller than usual and moves that can be a pain to pull off, this isn't really all that great. The designers insisted on superb animation, and they got it, but that's all they got. Unless you're a real Shaq fan, this just isn't happening.

Wanna Pass? Wanna Shoot? Wanna Flying Dragon-Kick?

Originally signed to do a basketball game that could've been called Shaq Vs. Jordan, NBA sensation Shaquille O'Neal wound up doing something totally different - a martial arts fighting game.

And who's dumb enough to pick a fight with Shaq? Nobody on this planet. During a tour with his team, O'Neal is transported to another dimension. There he finds fighters that are crazy enough to go up against his 7'1", 303 pound frame. He must defeat them all to stop an evil Warlord from returning to earth.

While the characters are slightly smaller than in most fighting games, Delphine hopes to make up for it with animation that's twice as smooth as the competition. The Genesis cart will clock in at 24 megs with 12 characters, while the SNES version will be trimmed to 16 megs with 8 characters (you can thank the money-grubbing guys at Nintendo for the difference).

Can Shaq rock the video game industry? Only time will tell, but if the big guy himself has anything to say about it, you can bet Shaq Fu will be a top seller.

The Shaq Attack is back! The SNES version was good, but this Genesis game's better.

Delphine Software (developers of Flashback) remains the brains behind the programming, but on the Genesis, you get twice as many fighters (12 versus six), and the action's more controllable. You can fight one-on-one or set up an eight-player tournament. In Story Mode, the tale's the same as it is on the SNES: Shaquille invades the mysterious Second World to keep a cursed mummy sorcerer from wreaking vengeance in our reality.

Mean Mutha Muscle

Shaq Fu unleashes a unique fighting arsenal. The most obvious feature is game speed. The fighters make incredibly quick movements, which appear almost comical until you get into them. Kaori the catgirl, for example, dashes in a blur forward or backwards. Voudoo becomes a fast low-slung wolf.

ProTip: Press Down and quickly tap Button A to maintain continous shield power.

Also, the game's packed with energy blasts and weapon attacks, making long-range combat much more of a factor than in any other fighting game. Several Shaq attackers, such as Sett and Beast, can vanish from afar to suddenly appear in your face.

A six-button controller's the way to play if you want to sizzle. Special attacks that require directional-pad moves fire instantly with the six-button controller. However, it's tough to make accurate jumping moves, because of the high-octane game speed.

  • Motion Forward, Down, and Back and hit Button B for Sett Ra's Mummy Wrap slap.
  • The loser screen reveals a special move for your character. Write it down.

A Little Big Man

The character sprites are short, but Delphine intentionally sacrificed size for speed and additional character animation. Fighting small's an acquired taste, but the blazing martial arts action is ably supplemented by intricate, impressively fluid animation.

Unfortunately, the sounds fizzle. Effects are minimal and the mundane, bouncy music's just on the okay side. At least you get a Shaq CD single bundled with your game.

Fu, Not Fool

Shaq Fu can muscle its way close to Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, but the smallish Shaq sprites may keep some fighters at bay. However, spend the time to master Shaq's attacks, and you'll gladly play the Fu.

The Shaq Attack is after Street Fighter II, but EA made one of the biggest men in pro basketball one of the smallest sprites in a fighting game. It's done in the name of game speed, however, so Shaq is no fool.

Shaq Fu Fightin'

Shaq Fu transports the big guy into a weird fantasy land to set up one-on-one fighting. Fight in the CPU-controlled Story mode, and you save a royal child from Sett Ra, an evil mummy, and his five cohorts. Naturally, one or two players can skip the dramatics for the Duel mode's best-two- out-of-three matchups. Additionally, eight players can rumble in a tournament.

  • Press Down, Toward, and A to pull a Shaq reverse Inferno Kick.
  • Don't skip the Game Over screens in Duel mode.
  • The Shield's were against ground-hugging special attacks.
  • Shaq Fu fighters use quick somersault jumps that are Ideal for psych moves.

Speed Demons

The Fu crew fires off high and low kicks and punches, fireballs, and at least three special moves each. You can pull basic Street Fighter-style combos, but two-in-ones are harder to find. Long-range specials, such as the Beast's Roar, are quite devastating.

But it takes more than knowing the moves to rule. You set game speed to either normal or fast... and normal makes Shaq Fu the fastest fighting game around! To keep Fu at bay, your reflexes must be lightning quick, Especially against the invisible attack of Sett Ra and the Beast.

To help you stave off a speedy booty whippin', the controls are ultra sharp. For example, you block by simply pressing Away, but if you continue to press Away and hit an attack button, you pull a slick counterstrike. You also get a, temporary Force Shield, and whenever you're in really bad -- shape, you acquire Fury power for one last desperate attack.

In Your Eyes

Delphine Software (of Flashback fame) programmed Shaq, and the flowing digitized graphics are championship caliber. However, you must balance the hundreds of excellent, high-speed martial arts animations against the obvious trade-off of sprite size.

The sounds have sizzle. The music breezes by, but the cool effects really stick it to you.

Just Fuing Around

Shaq's not going to fu the Street Fighter faithful, but he leads them into a good fight.

He's definitely got the stuff.

Shaq's back, but the larger-than-life basketball superstar is reduced to a shell of his former self. Shaq Fu for the Super Game Boy is injured and should be taken out for the season.

Shaq, Rattle, and Roll

Nowhere near as good as the mediocre 16-bit titles, Shaq Fu for the SGB is a waste of time and thumb tendons. Even portable fans will soon tire of the flaccid controls and rinky-dink gameplay.

You battle against a bud, take on the computer, or wade through a pretentious story scenario that's definitely NBA (nothing but atrocious). Although there are special moves in the game, you can just as easily win by kicking and punching.

The graphics are a small blur, and special moves don't look very special. The detail on all the fighters is lost, and even Shaq's face in the intro screens looks nothing like him.

The music is annoying and way too pervasive. Don't expea to hear the Game Boy audio innovations from Metroid or Super Mario Land 2 in this weak cart.

Shaq Smack

True Shaq fans would be better off watching taped games. And fighting fans need not apply because this has nothing to offer that you would want. This is no Love Shaq, just a bunch of Fu-eee.

  • Jump-kick for a bigger energy drain on opponents.
  • The roundhouse kick (tap Away and Button B) Is an effective attack when you're playing the computer.
  • Use your shield (tap Down-Toward and Button A) whenever you're being barraged by projectiles.
