I had never heard of Shadows of Doubt, but a good friend of mine sent me a link to it and now I am hooked! As of me writing this, the game does not have a set-in-stone release date just yet. However, many people have had time to check out the demo and it all looks very promising so far. It is a first-person detective game with a kind of retro style to it all that really appeals to the wannabe detective inside of me.
Smooth Criminal
As this is a game about crime, it is quite a story driven. Shadows of Doubt takes place in the 1980s, but it is an alternate reality 1980s that gives me a kind of Bladerunner with a little bit of Red Dawn going on vibes.
You are a private investigator and you make money by finding and then selling information. There is a serial killer that is causing chaos in the city, but there is a big price on his head so you head out to catch him! Of course, things are not as they seem and many twists and turns await you.
Style, But With No Lack Of Substance!
The whole aesthetic in Shadows of Doubt is fantastic. It has a film noir, but with a sci-fi twist going on that is just so very appealing. Things are quite low detailed, but at the same time, everything is nice and clear. It looks like a smoother and a more stylish version of a game that would have been around in the early 2000s. It just oozes style and the whole game has a very appealing look to me.
The City Is Alive
This is a detective game and it is massive. You are free to explore the city in any way that you want and it is going to be pretty easy to get lost in Shadows of Doubt if they are not careful with the tracking of missions. You have your main story arc, but there are also many side missions where you can use your detective skills to make some extra money. This city is massive and full of different locations such as people’s apartments, a dive bar, a casino, and even a shady motel!
There are a ton of NPCs who feel alive in this game that will be going around doing their business. You have to use stealth to sneak around, break into places, and so on.
The world is procedurally generated so you are never sure on what they are going to throw your way. The fact you have such freedom in how you go about completing missions is sure to give the game a great deal of replay value.
I really cannot wait for Shadows of Doubt to be finished as this is a game that looks like it is going to be a great deal of fun. I love playing as a detective, having to put things together, sneaking around, and finding the truth are all things I have a ton of fun with. While the game is not yet complete, it is showing a great deal of promise right now.
Pros:
- I love the whole style of the game
- There are many ways you can go about completing missions
- The world is procedurally generated
- I love the alternate world they have created here
Cons:
- I do worry about not knowing what you are supposed to do
- This kind of game is not going to be for everyone
