ScooterFlow

I was not sure if ScooterFlow would be for me, as I kind of missed the inline scooter craze by a few years. Growing up, I was all about skateboarding and BMX actually, I just remembered, I had this cool scooter that had a BMX style with large wheels. Anyway, this is a game that is about doing cool stuff on an inline scooter, and it ended up being a very addictive experience for me. For a few nights, after work, I would fire this up, put some music on, and just waste an hour or so pulling off cool tricks and progressing through the game.

Keeping It Real!

I would say that the best comparison for ScooterFlow is more Skate 3 than it is Tony Hawk’s Underground. I say this because while this does have a kind of arcade addictive quality about it. The developer of the game really wanted to make sure this was as realistic as possible, so we have some very interesting and realistic physics here. The “goal” or story of the game is to head to the various different parks and show that you are the best damn inline scooter around.

It’s Tricky!

That was a little RUN-DMC or, if you prefer, SSX Tricky reference for you there. Anyway, the most fun that I had with ScooterFlow was just riding around each of the five different skate parks and trying out new things. The controls do take a little while to get used to and as is the case with any game that goes for realistic physics, it did crap out on me in a hilarious way on a couple of occasions. However, there is just something very “zen” about the controls of this game that makes you want to keep on playing. It is like when you just waste a bunch of time screwing around in Tony Hawk 1+2 in the free skate mode, you are not really “achieving” anything, but racking up a high score just feels so addictive.

Scoot Your Booty

There is a really high level of customization available here in ScooterFlow. As I said, I am not an inline scooter enthusiast, but I had heard of a couple of the brands that are represented here. The idea is that you can customize your own scooter, and they rip all kinds of tricks with them. I thought that it was pretty cool how you could have multiple scooters saved at any one time, and switching between them was quick and easy. If you are into the world of inline scooters, I am sure you will appreciate the attention to detail here far more than my ignorant ass did.

Hitting The Streets

There are five skate parks for you to show off your scooter skills and scooter designs. ScooterFlow is a pretty solid looking game; it certainly has a Skate and Tony Hawk feel about it, which is more than ok with me. There are four skateparks from New Zealand and then one from Spain. The developer put a ton of time and effort into these, as they are done with being an exact 1 to 1 recreation in mind! Granted, I have never been to these places to confirm if this is real. However, I can tell you that the parks look cool and there are tons of things to grind and jump off from, and at the end of the day, that is all that matters. I would say that they do feel more like Skate than they do Tony Hawk, as they are more grounded in realism.

8.5

If you are not into inline scooters, but have enjoyed skateboarding and BMX games in the past, I highly recommend that you give ScooterFlow a try. I expected to play this once, maybe twice, and then move on from it. However, I ended up getting pretty good at this and found trying to beat my high scores very addictive. I can see myself firing this up for an hour here and there, many times in the coming months.

Pros:

  • Once I got the physics down, the scooter action felt great
  • Pulling off cool tricks is a lot of fun
  • Customizing your scooters was something that I enjoyed
  • There are five very realistic skate parks to play on

Cons:

  • It could have done with more content to keep you progressing
  • The gameplay is fun, but it does have a little bit of a learning curve
