If you are thinking that the name, Rockman X3 sounds familiar that is because this is actually Mega Man X3. This is a very interesting game in the X series. While the version I am looking at today is the Super Nintendo version of the game. This was also ported to the 32-bit systems of the day the PlayStation and the Sega Saturn. This would be the last game in the series to grace the Super Nintendo and it was a fantastic way for it to go out on that console.

The Utopia Has Fallen

Like the other two X games before it what we have here with Rockman X3 is a very story-driven game. This time around the robots are living in harmony, but a virus starts spreading like wildfire and Mega Man is needed to save the day once again. The story is actually very well done and has some great twists and turns to it so you will most certainly not want to skip any of it.

This is also a very good-looking game. Capcom always managed to get the best out of the SNES and this game is no different. The soundtrack though is not as good as the two previous games. I am not saying that it is bad, but there is just something a tad off about it.

Classic X!

The gameplay on offer in Rockman X3 is not changed all that much from the last game. Mega Man still has all his abilities from the previous games and as you play you can get new stuff that will upgrade and expand your abilities. The game is very challenging as a Mega Man game should be, but it never feels unfair. You will be doing a lot of platforming and shooting and one of the things that I have always enjoyed about this series is how it is skill-based. If you want to see the end of this game, you have to get good at it! It does not hold your hand, but that is what this series is all about.

From Zero To Hero

One really cool aspect of Rockman X3 is that this was the first game to let us actually play as Zero. Sure that has been done to death at this point, but even in the limited capacity, this game allows you to do it, playing as Zero is awesome. He plays differently to Mega Man and even though there are parts of the game where you are not allowed to play as him, it is still really cool.

8.5

Overall, I had a great time playing back through this game. It may not have added a great deal to the core gameplay from the previous game. However, I feel that Rockman X3 is still a damn fun time and a fantastic platform/shooter that is well worth having a playthrough. It is challenging, fun and it has a far better story than you would think.

Pros:

  • The game looks fantastic
  • I enjoyed being able to play as Zero
  • It is a great continuation from Rockman X2
  • The story is interesting and well written
  • The gameplay is fun and challenging

Cons:

  • Zero is awesome, but you are limited with him
  • The soundtrack is not the best in the series

This game looks good and the the moves the character can perform sound great!, But sadly they screwed up what could have been a classic with skittish player controls.
