I thought that would get your attention, and it should, because Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is just that'absolutely free.
ET isn't an expansion, it's a stand-alone multiplayer game that's free. In other words all you have to do is download this 275 Meg file and play to your heart's content. The other surprising thing about ET is that it's a spectacularly fun game to play.
ET uses the quite stable and always enjoyable Return to Castle Wolfenstein engine, graphics and sounds and then pumps it up a notch by making it not just multiplayer, but uniquely multiplayer.
In ET you get to choose from a handful of the typical modes of play to gun it out with your friends. What makes this first-person shooter so unique is that your character will earn skill points and level up in abilities throughout a match or campaign. So the longer you live the better you'll be at killing, building, and blowing things up.
Most of the modes like stopwatch, last man standing, and single map objective are pretty typical fare, but the campaign mode not only allows you to build experience between maps but also has a bit of a storyline that strings the whole thing together. Theoretically losing in one map could affect the outcome of where you go next, but unfortunately the game isn't designed that way. Instead you'll find yourself going through the same cycle of maps in the same order no matter which side, Axis or Allies, wins. Maybe some future full version game can explore this idea further.
ET allows you to choose between playing as a medic, soldier, engineer, field ops or covert ops. Each of the classes has their own particular skills, like being able to heal fallen or injured soldiers or call in air strikes. An added option is the ability to cut off a bad guys uniform and wear it in battle if you play covert ops's truly cool. Also this game relies much more heavily on the engineer, who has to plant bombs, build bridges and barriers, and even repair large weapons and vehicles.
Overall ET is an excellent game that is well-balanced and addictively fun to play. The only drawback (and it's a doozie) is the fact that the game only comes with six maps. Far too few for the amount of time most people will spend playing this great game.
Oh, and did I mention it was Free?
