Rayman 2 Revolution

The PS2 had an entire era of putting out games that exceeded all expectations, games in every single genre that one can think of. From Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater’s genre defying stealth mechanics, Shadow of the Colossus’ vast empty open lands to Kratos’ rage in God of War’s revenge fuelled Greek epic, The PlayStation 2 was a console that was unmatched in its power and its catalogue of solid first party exclusives and third party video games.

Among such games, was Rayman Revolution, a game that was originally released in 1999 on the original Nintendo 64, the game went through many different ports such as Microsoft Windows, Sega Dreamcast and Sony PlayStation before it reached by far the best port that it ever got, The PlayStation 2. With enhanced graphics, gameplay that was similar to but also a very newly vitalized change from the Crash Bandicoot and Jak and Daxter with new features that were added to make the game unique and different, simply to make it stand out amongst the competition.

Bigger, Better and Bolder

Rayman 2 Revolution like many other games is at first glance, your run of the mill platformer game, but it does some things better than other games in its genre; such as the camera movement, the streamlined controls that make it a modern take on the jump around genre by making it easy to grasp for new players.

The level design was quite different to usual platformer games at that time, with large open areas and many character interactions, obviously very inspired by Super Mario 64’s level design. The adventure from stage to stage unique with different locations such as largely vegetated islands and underground swamps, the art design of these levels always remains consistent however, making each area feel unique and different to the last.

Same Game, Brand New Experience

The graphical upgrades that Rayman Revolution got from its pre-existing ports is such a stellar visual upgrade, along with that, the developers added new mini-games into the mix to make the experience more varied, and some new cut-scenes that were fully voice acted in real life languages and not the gibberish that was in the previous ports. The story is also quite fun to follow and easy to understand.

The movement is quite fun to learn, and the variety in the stage design is what makes the game fun for both new players and veterans of the genre alike, but the best thing about this game are the surprises it throws at you, with sudden sections of zooming your way through an area on a rocket, or flying around on a lit gunpowder barrel. The game has many surprises in store for the players to always keep you on the edge of your seats.

Rayman Forever A Legend

Rayman: The Great Escape had a lot going for it when it was originally released on the Nintendo 64 and the Sega Dreamcast, but the PlayStation 2 port solidifies it as one of the absolute best platformer games, the developers; Ubisoft Montpellier made it into the history books by creating one of the most beloved franchises, and making a name for themselves in the platformer scene with this entry.
