Planetary Life

Oh boy, as soon as I started playing Planetary Life, I knew that this had the potential to be the kind of game that completely took over my life! This game is in early access, and the stuff that is coming later sounds fantastic, but even as is, this game is already great and has a lot of content for you to sink your teeth into as you play god! If you have always wanted to create life and watch it grow or self-destruct, this is the game for you. Just do not blame me if this game ends up taking over your life!

From A Single Cell, Life Is Born

Think of games like Spore, SimEarth, and SimLife, and you will have a decent idea of what to expect with Planetary Life. The idea is that we are the creator and we have to give life a nudge in the direction that we see fit. You start with cells, and you get to mess around with these cells to create life and also plants, fauna, and so on for your new world. The idea being that we then see how life evolves and shapes our world, giving us the chance to step in when we see fit. It is such a great concept and granted, one that other games have done before, but this game does it so, so well.

The Whole World In Your Hand

The world that you create in Planetary Life is something that you have a lot of say in. From the way that the tectonic plates shape the Earth to the devastation that things like volcanoes and rain can cause. You always feel like you are one disaster away from everything going wrong. However, one of the things that I thought was really cool was when one species would rise up and just cause havoc, or when something unexpected would happen and cause you to have to reevaluate the whole world that you had planned. Oh, you can even go into first-person and wander around the different parts of your world to see what is happening up close and personal!

Creepy Yet Beautiful!

The presentation of Planetary Life is something that I like. Seeing your cell organism evolve into something like a creepy-looking bug or some kind of sea monster is very cool. The bugs, in particular, have a very creepy vibe about them in the way that they move, and I thought that was a lot of fun. The game has a very nice look to it. I would say that there is almost a kind of cell-shaded, but not quite, style to the game, which is something that I liked. There is still a lot to do here, but so far, I think that they have some fantastic building blocks in place here, but speaking of having a lot to do!

Evolution!

Nope, I am not talking about WWE Smackdown vs RAW 2006! But I do want to talk about a few of the things that the developer of Planetary Life has said that they have planned. To start with, what has me the most excited is that these creatures will eventually be able to evolve into a smart and interesting society, forming tribes and civilizations! The possibilities here are pretty much endless, and this is by far the most exciting thing that I think the game has planned as it leaves early access. Also, from what I understand, elements that are already in the game will be enhanced, too. For example, the atmosphere on your planet just basically has to be so that things can live and breathe. But this is going to be expanded with more intricate forms of atmosphere that can have a radical effect on the type of life that can grow on your planet.

As of right now, Planetary Life is a fantastic game, and I think that there is a lot here to keep you busy. For an early access game, it is very impressive just how much there is that you can do with your planet. They could leave the game as it is, and I still think that it would be well worth your time playing. However, I am very, very excited for the stuff that the developer has planned, and this may sound extreme, but if it all goes to plan, this could be a 10/10 game for me when it is all finished.

Pros:

  • Playing as God has never felt so much fun
  • It is awesome to see your creations evolve
  • There are many random and unpredictable things to contend with
  • The roadmap for this sounds epic!

Cons:

  • No word on when that big civilization creation update will happen
  • For some these games are addictive, for others, they just do not click with them

Game Reviews

Planetary Life is an upcoming sandbox strategy game from developer Sotenbox, in which players will have to explore new planets and pump up civilizations starting from the bottom of evolution. Gameplay begins with the fact that in the vast space you choose one of thousands of favorite planets. Be like God and create everything step by step - first land and water, then mountains and volcanoes, continents and finally countries. Or you can let things take their course and let the planet evolve on its own, while remaining in the role of an observer. You can intervene in the process of the emergence of flora and fauna, choosing the most suitable species of the most primitive creatures. Gradually they will turn into animals, and possibly evolve into intelligent creatures similar to humans.

Game Features

  • The game is still in early access, in the installer is version 0.5.7
  • Or maybe you will be able to take out even more intelligent race than humans, which will look absolutely fantastic, reminiscent of comic books about aliens
