For the right kind of gamer, Out of Ore is easily the kind of game that 100 hours can be sunk into! If you grew up loving playing with your trucks and diggers in the back yard, pretending that you were hauling all kinds of precious materials. That is basically what this game here is! This is one of the most fun and addictive sim games that I have stumbled across this year, and granted, it may not be technically perfect, but it is made by a small team after all. However, even with the quirks, this was something that took over my life for a period of time.
Heading Up North…. Eh
As you would expect, there is no actual story that is running through Out of Ore, but the premise here is awesome. We have been tasked with heading up North to set up a mining operation to mine for precious ore. The twist here is that how we go about this is completely up to us! The game does have a learning curve as you are figuring things out, but I do feel that the start of the game, more than moves you along in the right direction for you to figure things out and get an idea of how to build your mining operation.
A Long Day Mining
There are many different machines that you can use in Out of Ore. Pretty much your entire toy chest of Tonka Trucks that you had as a kid are here for you to buy and to use. The thing is, the more powerful the machinery, the harder they are to get the hang of. Some are easier to use than others, but the terrain can be a little finicky, so even when you do have an idea of how to control one of these mechanical beasts, you can hit a little bit of rock or terrain, and your machine is now flying through the air. It is a pretty unique physics system for sure, and when you use explosives, there is just crap flying all over the place, sometimes getting stuck in the strangest places, which, rather than taking me out of the game, I just thought was hilarious.
One More Load
There was this really addictive quality that Out of Ore had for me. Basically, you work, mine the ore, refine it, sell it, and then reinvest it in your business. There is a very large map with many different types of areas for you to explore and mine. You can use your equipment to mine, but you can also blow huge chunks of ground and rock up if you need to. You can also purchase equipment that will sort and refine your materials for you as well. You are basically building up to having this huge operation that is pretty much self-sufficient. The thing is, for some people, a game about using heavy machinery to mine ore so that you can buy more heavy machinery is not going to be a good time. However, as I said, for those who loved playing with their toy trucks, diggers, and excavators, this is like the new version of that…. And it is so much fun, even if it does have a few quirks that are mainly due to the realistic physics system that the game has.
This Is My Company
The visuals of Out of Ore are pretty awesome. I love the Klondike setting, and the rocks and mud, and the ore that you are driving over, mining, and moving around is all decent enough to look at. The heavy machinery is awesome, and I know for a fact that little five year old me would have flipped out over this game! Well, I would never have been able to play it, but I would have loved watching my dad play it. What I like best about the presentation of the game is that you can customize the equipment, not just in the way that you are thinking of making it better. I am talking about with custom paint jobs! This is so cool, as it truly does make you feel like this is your company.
I will say that a game like this is certainly an acquired taste. If you have an interest in badass trucks and big heavy machinery, you will more than likely enjoy what Out of Ore is offering. The fact that this was made by a small team is very impressive, and it is pretty packed with content. However, I do think the small team size does shine through due to some of the minor issues that the game has, which are mainly tied to the physics system. Hey, at the end of the day, it is not bad, and it is far from being a game breaker.
Pros:
- There are many different types of heavy machinery
- This game is very addictive
- I loved building up my mining company
- Mining and selling your ore is a lot of fun
Cons:
- Sometimes the physics can cause chaos
- You do have to be into these types of vehicles to enjoy this game
