Wow is what I said the first time I played Mr. Bean for the PlayStation 2. I am from the UK so for over 30 years, I have enjoyed the wacky antics of Rowan Atkinson’s famous character. He had a movie and he also had an animated series on which this game is based on. Even though the real-life Rowan Atkinson is featured on the box. Let me say, this is one of the worst games I have ever played, but it is so bad that I actually recommend you play it so you can see for yourself how bad it is.

Teddy, Who Took Teddy?

Look, no one expected Mr. Bean the video game to have an outstanding plot or anything, but this is pretty lame. Teddy has been kidnapped. Who has kidnapped him? I would love to tell you, but the game does not give you this information! To get him back, the kidnapper wants cat biscuits. That is right, cat biscuits, you get him all the cat biscuits he wants and you get Teddy back. Oh, there is also a subplot about finding jigsaw pieces too.

A game based on Mr. Bean should have had a zany comedy story, even if it was based on the animated series. Instead, we get this which feels like it was written on a bar napkin while one of the design team was on lunch break.

Mr. Bean The Stage Show

The game is based on the animated series and that is ok with me. However, it lacks all of the personality that you would expect from something that stars Mr. Bean. A huge part of what makes this character are the facial expressions, but they never change! He never even makes any of the strange noises either. The worst part though is that the levels are a mixture of this weird 2D and 2D style which makes most of them look like a stage from a school play where the kids themselves designed the stages!

There are some FMV clips in the game which are taken directly from the show and that is ok, but I am not giving the game credit for them as they literally just took them from the show!

Opening A Can Of Beans

No one expects to play a game with Mr. Bean as the main character and have him be like Marcus Fenix from Gears of War, but holy crap is he pathetic to play as. To start with, he cannot kill anything, all you can do is stun enemies! You can use bug spray, a frying pan, and a pirate hat that makes you invincible that is all you have. It is better just to run past the enemies, but that is easier said than done.

You knew before you got to this point that this game was going to have terrible controls! The camera is just god-awful, the levels feel like they go on forever and the whole thing just feels so rough and sluggish. The game is actually very easy, but it is the rigid and stuff controls, terrible camera angles, and cheap collision detection that makes it challenging.

I loved the Mr. Bean TV series and thought that the movies were a lot of fun too. While it was not aimed at me, I could even see the charm of the animated series as well. The only redeeming quality this game offers is that it is kind of fun to talk about with other people who have played it as it is so bad, you kind of have to play it to see for yourself. People often talk about games like Superman 64, ET, and Big Rigs to name a few, but I would put Mr. Bean for PlayStation 2 pretty damn high on that list too!
