Mount & Blade: Warband - The Parabellum

Mount and Blade as a series has a serious reputation in the realms of open world medieval RPGs. There have been thousands of players that have committed some serious time to this game (well over 10,000 hours for a few that I saw while researching) that love it like no other. Warband was the truly defining moment for this series that featured vast capabilities for competitive play, limitless potential for roleplaying ideas, and endless game modes with the scenario editor that let players design as they pleased. The game alone has been a treasure trove of unique, passionate design that has consistently made Warband what it is. Combined with the love and care put into Mount & Blade: Warband - The Parabellum, a completely new addition of WWI aspects to Warband, there’s a lot too love and become further invested in despite the game releasing 11 years ago.

Become a King

The primary draw of the game is the single player experience. Again, the number of hours put into this game by the average player are astronomical compared to other games, easily reaching the 500+ hour mark for a decent majority. Being an RPG sandbox medieval title, ‘what exactly is there to do’ just isn’t the right question. The better question would be, ‘What can’t you do?’ Without installing a single mod, I had the time of my life. No the graphics aren’t quite the best and some of the AI are shoddy at best, but taking in the entire political system alone (rather simplified but still impressive) could consume your time for days. You can manage your land, fight in tournaments, raid villages, develop war tactics, take over the land, literally anything is possible with enough creativity. No, there isn’t any form of story since it is a sandbox game.

However, this doesn’t harm the game at all. If you’re looking to increase your enjoyability of this title with a little bit more engagement, look no further than the multiplayer scene or possibly installing The Parabellum. Parabellum is a player-created mod by master_copypaster that takes place in 1918 near the close of WWI. It adds tons of different coalitions that act as proxies for the Allies vs. Axis powers. Plus, dozens of troops, tanks, weapons, and warplanes can be purchased to toy around with along with tons of animations. It adds a huge realm of possibility to the already sweeping potential. I was blown away by a mod of this caliber.

Craft your Experience

Should single player not be enough for you, multiplayer offers an entirely different experience altogether. The gameplay is generally the same, but player interactions are just the opposite. Given the fluid combat system, dynamic politics, and genuinely entertaining sandbox possibilities, any number of things can be achieved in multiplayer from developing a whole roleplay-centered town to staging all out war against other player factions. You have virtually nothing to truly lose and only stand to gain an incredible, unmatchable experience within a medieval world full of dedicated people.

Adding in the new wartime capabilities of the Parabellum mod and you could officially become a virtual WWI reenactor. Not every system is finely tuned, yet this doesn’t limit the fun whatsoever. Unfortunately, the multiplayer scene has become severely limited since the release of Bannerlord, which did not perform as well, and has fragmented the player base.

Mount and Blade: Warband and the accompanying Parabellum mod go together like fine cheese and wine. They complement each other nicely and create a unique synergy that can only be obtained from the odd combination of a medieval sandbox RPG and a WWI mod being introduced in the same universe.

Pros:

  • Infinite possibilities
  • Great combat – lots of fun
  • Intuitive political systems
  • WWI setting of Parabellum adds great new features/graphics

Cons:

  • Online player base a shell of what it was
  • Graphics a bit rough (negligible with gameplay though)
  • Fun had depends entirely on creativity/imagination – no story
