Game Reviews

Mad Dog McCree, the toughest villain in the West, returns for another exciting trigger-happy adventure. Mad Dog II: The Lost Cold is a hot 3DO shooter that's a shot ahead of the original.

Mad Doggy Dog

This time, Mad Dog and his gang of outlaws are searching the plains for lost gold. Your job is to beat his gang to the treasure and return it before they fill you full of lead! As usual, you have to distinguish the banditos from the innocent townsfolk, or else the wrong people will die and you'll wind up six feet under. One or two players can choose between three guides who lead you down various trails to the gold.

If you're looking for the true Western experience, the Game-gun (sold separately) is a must. The lack of this cool peripheral made the first Mad Dog slow and tough. Incredibly accurate with an easy trigger, the gun gives you the necesssary quickness to make those life-saving decisions. You can use a regular controller, but it's less responsive, and you'll bite the bullet more often.

Bad to the Bone!

Filmed as a live-motion video, MDII has incredibly realistic graphics. Thanks to the first-person perspective, you have a clear view of every shot, explosion, and desperado.

Mad Dog's real digitized voices and sounds make every battle an intense standoff. And keeping an ear on things might just keep you alive.

Outstanding in every way, Mad Dog II is a powerful Western shootout that helps justify the cost of a 3DO. This one's solid gold.

  • PROTIP: If you choose Shooting Beaver as your guide, be ready to aave his life In the beginning sequence.

Mad Dog McCree is a rootin' tootin' shootin' game in the arcades. The 3DO version mimics the original's graphics and basic game play, but the arcades are still the best places to play this game.

The Mild, Wild West

In this funky first-person gun game, you're a gunslinger called the Stranger, and you're out to clean up a one-horse town that's being held hostage by Mad Dog McCree and his notorious gang. You aim by pressing the directional controls to move a little hand holding a gun.

The Practice mode is the first indication that you're in for a long ride. You shoot bottles off a fence. The firing sequence goes like this: press the trigger button, hear a bang, count "one Mississippi," see the gun recoil, blink your eyes, then watch the bottle break. That would be nice if you were shooting from 200 yards away, but these targets are in your face!

It's Called Acting!

At least the graphics are impressive, if a bit grainy. The story is a classic horse opera, played out by real actors in costume, who pull off just about every cowboy stereotype there is. The old prospector, the undertaker, and the dastardly villains are familiar and fun. You get gunfights galore in a saloon, in a stable, at a bank, and in just about every other typical cowboy scenario.

The characters speak directly to you, and the predictable dialogue is a kick for cowboy wannabees. Likewise, the CD sound effects are crystal clear.

Mad Dogs Foam at the Mouth

As the Undertaker says, "In this game you better get lucky or you're gonna be dead." Unfortunately, he's right, since the unwieldy controls frequently send you to Boot Hill. The directional controls are shaky and imprecise. After several attempts, you can anticipate exactly when and where each gunman will appear. Even then, moving your gunsight to the right spot in time is a chancy chore.

Another prominent flaw is the frequent and noticeable disc-accessing, which freezes the on-screen action. Moreover, almost every such pause is a dead giveaway that a bad guy's about to appear.

No Thank You, Masked Man

Mad Dog McCree 3DO will make Mad Dog arcade fans mad. American Laser Games reports it has a 3DO gun in the works for '94. You might not want to face Mad Dog until you get your shots.

ProTips:

  • Don't fight lair! Never let the bad guys draw first.
  • Always aim for the torso.
  • It's critical to reload as quickly as you can. Do It at any opportunity!
  • If a bad guy pops up when the screen freezes as the game reads the CD, move your gunsight on him. Immediately begin pressing the trigger before the action resumes, or he's likely to nail you.
  • During a one-on-one showdown, slide your bolstered gun along the bottom of the screen until It's directly underneath the bad guy. That way you can load quickly and press Up to draw a bead on him.
  • Remember, since yon have to pull the trigger to select the stage you plan to play, you lose one shot!

Return to the Wild West with Mad Dog II: the Lost Gold. The ruthless criminal Mad Dog is back, and it's a race against him to find the lost gold and return it to an old mission.

Like the first Mad Dog game, the sequel offers players the chance to step into the shoes of a sheriff. You will end up facing Mad Dog's men wherever you go. You'll even end up having to fight them atop a moving train covered with Mad Dog's baddies.

Mad Dog II: the Lost Gold will be released for both the Sega CD and the 3DO systems. You will find that both are very accurate to the arcade coin-op that was so popular.

This one-or two-player game uses live actors and full-motion video to bring the first-person arcade shooter to life. You're a cowboy in the Old West, hunting down Mad Dog and his band of renegades to beat them to the punch in the hunt for gold treasure. The interactive gameplay includes scenes in a moving wagon train and a climactic final showdown with Mad Dog. The gameplay is designed to change depending on the decisions the player makes.
