Roguelike games are notorious for being difficult, frustrating, and often edgy games. Lucky Tower Ultimate however, has a somewhat different approach to this very popular genre. Lucky Tower Ultimate is a slapstick style game where death is as random as the gameplay.
The main character of the game is a pot-bellied, perfectly groomed knight named Von Wanst. He finds himself trapped in a tower filled with dangers, that he needs to escape. Along the way he may find other prisoners, and if he helps them, they can become his companions.
Never Ending Gameplay
Lucky Tower Ultimate features randomly generated levels make each playthrough of the game unique. No more memorizing levels so you can dash through the first few at lightning speed. Each level is filled with hilarious traps, and dying is almost as fun as getting through.
On top of this, companions in the game react to how you treat them. If you treat them well, they will remember that and treat you accordingly. If you treat them poorly, they’ll remember that also and possibly become your enemy.
This once again adds to the replay value for the game. Once you’ve gone through the game as a good guy, rescuing the other characters and taking them to safety, you can try a different personality and simply slash your way down without a care in the world. It’s entirely up to you, and the results of the game will be different with each approach you take.
Hand Drawn Aesthetic
The developer went the extra mile with both the audio and visual in this game. The visuals include a beautiful, hand drawn appearance. Character and movement is both cute and smoothly animated. In particular, when the character dies the expressions on Von Want’s face are often so hilarious, it’s worth dying just to see them. The producer of Lucky Tower Ultimate is well known for their stylistic games, with this being their 4th game. All of them have very beautiful styles, with “It’s A Wrap” having very similar artwork to Lucky Tower Ultimate. The audio is also fantastic, with the entire game being fully voiced.
Early Release
Although the game seems to be more or less complete, the game is going to be available as an Early Release. The developers say their reason for releasing it as an Early Release is because of the randomly generated levels.
While randomly generated levels increase the novelty of the game, it also opens up the possibility of more bugs and errors, which are very difficult to test for. They want to keep the game open so they have the opportunity to fix as many bugs as possible before releasing the game as completed.
This game has everything a roguelike could ask for. It’s funny, both winning and losing is fun, and the game itself is challenging. If you are a fan of roguelikes and enjoy a dose of humor in your games, this is a must for your collection.

- Endless Replay Value
