Jack Move

When I heard that Jack Move was a cyberpunk JRPG I knew that this was a game I had to play. Thankfully, it came out on a weekend when I was completely free and I beat the game during that first weekend. You may think I am going to complain that the game is short, but that is not the case at all. This was a truly remarkable experience and it is one of the better retro inspired, but modern JRPGs that I have played in a very, very long time.

Saving Your Dad, Saving The City

The story that Jack Move is telling is fantastic. I was pulled in when I saw the first cinematic trailer. We play as a feisty and cool hacker called Noa whose dad was doing research on digitized consciousness. He was taken captive by the corporation, Monomind who basically runs the city and has a hand in everything that goes on, legal and illegal. Noa is going to get her dad back and find out what these guys are really up to. This is a tremendous cyberpunk style story that had me gripped right from the start. It is very well told and I love how it has a real murder mystery type vibe to it all.

Battling In Cyberspace

The battle system in Jack Move is a ton of fun. It is a turn based style of combat just like it should be in a modern JRPG. However, it has a few neat twists that really do set it apart from all the rest. You have three other people in your party, but they are not all there at once like in Final Fantasy for example. You have these decks and hacks that you can make your attacks from and getting organized, and switching in and out are all things that you will have to do in battle. It is the kind of thing that sounds odd and confusing, but it is not. Instead, we get a real deep level of strategy that is actually quite accessible.

Poking Around Town

Speaking of accessible, Jack Move is a game that is very easy to play in general. The UI is fantastic and exploring the town, talking to characters, finding items, new quests, and so on is an absolute pleasure. One thing that is quite small, but is something I really appreciated was how it told you when you approached an NPC if you already spoke to them and they have nothing new to say.

The Best Around?

As far as pixel art games go, Jack Move is close to the top of my list for 2022. This game is just stunning to look at! I love the world that they have created here and despite the retro charm that pixel art has. This game is packed with little details that really do bring this world to life. There are also these gorgeous cut scenes as well which look like a movie. The game has some impressive voice acting and the music is great, but I do feel that the music does repeat a bit too often, a couple more tracks would have really been the icing on the cake here.

9.5

As you can tell, Jack Move is a game that I had a very good time with. If you like JRPGs, you have to play this game! If you like cyberpunk, you have to play this game! If you like compelling stories with well written characters, you have to play this game! I am pretty certain that when it comes time to make my game of the year list for 2022, Jack Move is going to feature on that list.

Pros:

  • The story in this game is great
  • There are many compelling characters
  • I loved the battle system in the game
  • The exploration aspect of the game is done very, very well

Cons:

  • It could have done with a few more tracks
  • If you have never been into turn based JRPGs, this may not excite you the way it did me
