JRPGs have reigned supreme for decades now. Despite the introduction of hundreds of new video games and genres since this genre itself surfaced, even the original titles manage to keep players coming back. During this same period, there has been a constant effort on the behalf of game developers to reimagine what a JRPG can do. Hyperdimension Neptunia is one of the few examples of this genre to really push the envelope in what players can expect while they play.
Though the core gameplay follows the same formula as all its predecessors, this series initially tried to take a stab at creating its own hyperanime world similar to the Disgaea and Fairy Fencer F series of games. Its debatable whether they were successful in making an all-around good game, but I would say that there are a few qualities that make it worthwhile.
Neptune and Godesses
You assume the role of Neptune, or Purple Heart officially, for this game in an attempt to save Histoire from the clutches of dangerous monsters. I’ll get to the acceptable gameplay for the moment, but there are two primary issues with this game that quickly become apparent. If you’re looking for a game driven by its impressive story, you might as well stop here. Although there’s plenty of dialogue and things going on in the story, its difficult to say that anything is actually happening between any supporting characters in here. As Neptune makes their way through this world, I couldn’t help but feel like there was a huge aspect of the world that was missing. I quickly realized that, at least for me, the world felt dead. Its not that there was a lack of characters/NPCs in sheer number, its that none of them ever really contributed anything important.
The dialogue could potentially be chalked up to poor translation, but I don’t know that this would’ve helped. Second, the portrayal of women in this game is problematic at best. There’s nothing inherently wrong with making a sexualized game – there’s plenty of other games that have that content – there’s just definitely a right and wrong way to handle character representation. This game does it poorly and it leaves a bad taste in your mouth afterwards. Despite the niche gameplay that could appease many people, I genuinely felt these aspects held the game back.
War of the Consoles
The gameplay of Neptunia does feel like it’s a bit barebones when compared to other JRPGs. Primarily, the lack of an overworld is a bit off-putting, meaning you’re essentially just bumbling through dungeons endlessly during the game, all of which look similar. Additionally, controlling movement is almost a chore given how unoptimized it is. These negative aspects aside, I actually liked the combo-based combat system they’ve created. You don’t select moves to attack with, but you instead create your own mixture of attacks to form a powerful move.
Realistically, this isn’t my cup of tea, but I thought at the very least it was unique and provided a bit more freedom than other titles. Outside of this, and the magic system, which was extremely underpowered and underutilized, there’s not a lot to say for the gameplay.
Overall, this was a lackluster title that had a pretty good idea with poor execution. Its not the worst game to play in the world – you’d just probably have to be an extreme JRPG fanatic to get much enjoyment out of it given its disconnected feeling and minor combat system.
