Vast Reaches aims to capture the grandeur of space warfare and the original's tactical depth. Still, its VR approach results in a more simplified experience. This "lite" version of Homeworld leaves players wishing for more depth.

In Homeworld: Vast Reaches, players take on the role of a Hiigaran fleet commander. The game's single-player campaign unfolds through classic Homeworld-style animatic cutscenes and narration, filling in the story between Homeworld and Homeworld 2 events. While the setting and narrative are enjoyable, the game's shallow mechanics and lack of substantial space battles make this feel more like an entry-level experience than a full-fledged Homeworld game.

Ships are grouped, meaning they all act as one unit, limiting the ability to micromanage or target individual ships. This reduction feels like a missed opportunity for a series known for its tactical depth.

The pacing of combat also feels rushed. Ships explode almost instantly upon taking fire, making battles feel more chaotic than strategic. There's little time to react, and the lack of immersive visuals only adds to the detachment. While zooming in on units brings back familiar ship designs, the lack of detailed textures and animated turrets makes the ships feel static. Homeworld veterans who enjoyed the original's detailed, slower-paced battles may find the VR adaptation's fast, frantic nature jarring.

Graphically, Vast Reaches looks decent for a Meta Quest game, but it doesn't match the polish of past Homeworld entries. The monochromatic environment works, but the flat textures and blurry details make it feel underwhelming.
