In Hello Engineer, you explore an abandoned amusement park and collect scrap parts like frames, wheels, and jet engines. With these parts, you can construct wacky contraptions like rockets, tanks, and helicopters. The only objective? Escape your whacky neighbor, of course.
As someone who grew up playing construction games like Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, I was eager to try out Hello Engineer: Scrap Machines Constructor. This multiplayer construction game set in the Hello Neighbor universe allows players to scavenge parts and build unique vehicles to overcome challenges.
After spending countless hours tinkering in the garage, I can confidently say that Hello Engineer delivers an incredibly fun and creative experience.
Satisfying Creative Freedom
The creative freedom in Hello Engineer is extremely satisfying. There are no limits on what you can build, so you're only constrained by your imagination. I spent hours just messing around with different part combinations to see what I could come up with.
Being able to quickly test and iterate on designs right in the garage makes the whole process incredibly fun. And the physics are lively enough to really make each machine feel distinct when driving it around.
The building tools are intuitive and easy to use, allowing you to snap parts together and test out your creations. I loved how every machine I built felt totally unique. Even when working with the same basic parts, I was able to create so many different designs. This flexibility encourages experimentation, which is so important in a game about engineering.
Charming Visuals
Visually, Hello Engineer uses a charming art style reminiscent of Hello Neighbor. The dilapidated amusement park backdrop creates an eerie yet whimsical setting for your engineering antics. I loved little visual touches like seeing smoke sputter out of faulty engine designs.
The overall presentation really sells the idea that you're cobbling together ramshackle contraptions out of discarded scrap. The game also throws in playful animations when your vehicle crashes or gets damaged.
Now that games like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom have become the golden norm for building games, Hello Engineer manages to stay on its own two feet thanks to its pretty visuals and relaxed gameplay.
Thrilling Challenges
Of course, all those creative toys need proper objectives to tackle. Hello Engineer delivers here with an assortment of challenges to overcome. You'll have to transport objects, defeat enemy robots, and take down towering bosses. Each task requires you to think carefully about designing an efficient, purpose-built machine.
The challenges strike a nice balance between difficulty and approachability. And since there are no set solutions, you're encouraged to test the limits of your engineering skills. As you complete challenges, you'll unlock new parts to build even more absurd contraptions.
This drip feed of new blocks keeps the experience feeling fresh. And seeing your garage slowly fill up with your wild collection of custom vehicles is rewarding.
With its emphasis on unbridled creativity and physics-based gameplay, Hello Engineer is an absolute blast.
