Genji Days of the Blade

A tale of magic and swordsmanship set in feudal Japan, Genji: Days of the Blade is an intense hack-and-slash game that combines elements from Japanese folklore and historical facts to deliver a unique storytelling experience.

The game is a sequel to Genji: Dawn of the Samurai, continuing the story from its prequel with the same set of characters. However, players new to the world of Genji are introduced to the plot of the previous game right at the beginning of Days of the Blade, making this the perfect entry point for players looking for a challenging title with a Japanese theme.

Blade and Spells

Veterans of the Onimusha series will feel right at home with Genji: Days of the Blade. From the game’s setting to the overall gameplay, many aspects of this series seem to be inspired by Capcom’s highly-popular hack-and-slash series.

The previous game in the series introduced some of the characters we’d see in this sequel, with the only difference being that gameplay is much more open-ended in this game. While each of the game’s protagonists bears their signature weapons (like Yoshitsune with his sword and Lord Buson with his spear) each of them also has the ability to change their weapons in real time.

History in the Making

Beyond the infamous “giant enemy crab,” Genji: Days of the Blade does a great job trying to remain as true to the time period as possible. The story takes place three years after the events of the first Genji game.

The plot chronicles the battle between the Genji and Heishi clans. However, very early on, the game stops being a run-of-the-mill historical drama and becomes a full-on Ninja Gaiden fantasy adventure.

For an action game, Genji: Days of the Blade is surprisingly plot-heavy. Characters and story beats are impressively detailed, going the extra mile to deliver an engaging narrative experience.

It’s safe to say that if you enjoy games in which the plot takes prevalence over anything else, then Genji: Days of the Blade will be right up your alley. The same can’t be said, however, of the game’s visuals and controls.

Technical Difficulties

As an early PlayStation 3 title, Genji: Days of the Blade runs into its fair share of technical issues. For starters, this was one of the first games that utilized the system’s built-in HDD, which was great for loading times but also caused some texture streaming issues.

Slowdowns and other graphical issues aside, there’s a bigger issue that dampens most of the enjoyment anyone could get from this game: the atrocious camera. Forced camera angles turned every enemy encounter into a battle against the game itself.

All in all, as long as you can look past these minor annoyances, there’s a lot to explore and enjoy in this early PS3 title. Also, beware of those giant enemy crabs — they really pack a punch.

7

Genji: Days of the Blade suffers from the usual technical shortcomings of the games of its era, but it also delivers a unique narrative experience that’s certainly worth playing.
