If you're an RPG gamer who's a fan of Koei's historical simulations, then you truly revel in the power of the imagination. Genghis Khan II is good SNES fun that works your mind with numbers, stats, icons, and info overload in general.

Khan's Job

Genghis Khan II features four actual thirteenth-century scenarios, and that's plenty. You'll spend days, maybe weeks, trying to conquer the Mongolian tribes or all of Eurasia.

ProTip: Max out on archers -- Longbowmen, Shortbowmen, Horse Archers, and Crossbowmen -- when you can.

As in all Koei historical sims, youmust become a number-crunching, multitasking maniac to succeed. The broad skills you must perfect cover the categories of national policy-making, diplomacy, warfare, economic strategy, domestic affairs, and family matters.

  • Domestic Revolts are a drain on your resources. Avoid them by giving alms to your people as frequently as possible.
  • Once you've conquered Vassal States, it's critical that you help them build up their Gold and Food supplies. You'll lose them if you don't.

Within those areas, things get complex fast. As a policy maker, you set the course for your nation's military posture and economic goals. As a warrior you recruit generals, draft soldiers, and pillage neighboring states. On the economic side you trade goods. Among domestic affairs, you allocate labor and tax the citizens. As a family man, you raise sons and daughters to help further your world-conquering goals. That's just a sampling of your tasks and sometimes you manage all this in one turn!

  • If you're in the mountains or the forests, an Ambush will help you defeat a superior force.
  • There's no such thing as a fast game here, but unless you have mucho time on your hands, choose not to view combat clashes between neighboring states.
  • An arranged marriage between your Princess and a General will ensure that the General is always faithful to you.
  • Remember, you must have a successor who's at least 10 years old in order to continue a game. Activate the Family command from the Personnel area often, until you've sired at least one Prince.

The game's interface appears daunting at first, and it takes time and study to figure it all out. (Don't ever lose the manual.) However, once you get your mind in tune with the icons and the numbers, the game play flows smoothly. The prodigious menu/icon system enables you to easily rule your nation and hopefully, the world. Who You Callin' a Barbarian?

When you enter combat, the game shifts from the menu system to nicely implemented turn-based battles. You fight via a 3/4-overhead Battle Display.

Within this battlefield view you can maneuver 16 types of units, including Lancers, Archers, Samurai, and even Elephants. The thumb action's almost nonexistent. The combat thrill here is in crushing your foe with well-planned strategy and tactics.

Mongolian Beefs

As in all Koei games, Khan's graphics don't have much to offer beyond icons and numbers, except a very few excellent static character images. However, the Battle Display, with its cartoony ponies and soldiers, leaves much to be desired. The sounds take the minimalist approach: No noise is good noise. The music has a catchy Asian flavor.

Khan You Dig It?

Genghis Khan II draws its strength from the greatest game-making computer ever your mind. If you're looking to make history, Khan can.

Game Reviews

In the tradition of the great Koei simulations, Genghis Kahn II: Clan of the Grey Wolf, a game about war and survival in ancient times, is on its way! Take control of your military forces and try to win the wars.

Genghis Khan II: Clan of the Grey Wolf (Aoki Ookami to Shiroki Mejika: Genchou Hishi in Japan) is part of Koei's Historical Simulation Series of games, which was developed and published for SNES, Sega Genesis, and DOS. The game includes a turn-based battle sequence, allowing specific control to the player or delegated to a general. The player is given the option to conquer either the country of Mongolia as Genghis Khan himself, or to play as a world leader and take over the known world of the time.
