Garfield is a popular cartoon character kids have loved for over 40 years. In this video game, Garfield learns that there is a “treasure hunt” going on around the world, and the winnings are a lifetime supply of lasagna. He sets out with his trusted pal Odie to win the lasagna all for himself in Garfield: Lasagna World Tour.
If you loved Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties, prepare to be disappointed. While it is similar in terms of story and characters, this game has a lot of problems with it.
Voicing issues
One of the things you notice from the very beginning is that there are some serious issues with the voices for the characters. Voice actors can really make a difference in the quality of the game, and this is one area EKO software dropped the ball.
Sometimes the voices don’t match the subtitles, or even what is going on in the scene. At one point, Garfield even responds to a question that was never asked. The tone of the actors themselves are also often inappropriate for what the character is feeling. The result is terrible voicing that makes it hard to enjoy the game.
Poor graphics
Garfield: Lasagna World Tour has graphics that match the voicing. While most Garfield games, such as Garfield Kart or Garfield’s Wild Ride have great graphics, these 3D animations look like they were made by struggling college students.
Repetitive gameplay
After the initial intro, the game takes you to a tutorial where you learn how to do things like kick Odie onto a target, and run away from dogs that want to attack you. Everything you learn in the tutorial is used over and over again in future gameplay, without much new material added as time goes on. Young kids may find this game fun to play, but adults and older children may find themselves bored to tears with the repetition.
Lots of glitches
One final problem is that if you bring the wrong items to one of the end levels, you won’t be able to advance at all. It’s also extremely difficult to rectify this problem, you have to completely exit out of the game and go back to your last save point. Also, you can’t save just anywhere, but at set points, so you may lose a lot of game time to fix this problem.
Levels are large
Although most of this game is low quality, it is relatively generous with its level size, so you won’t run out of dogs to kick, pots to smash, or teddy bears to collect before coming to the end of the level. This also makes the game for the most part much too easy, because while lives are easy to lose, you can just get them back by smashing one of the dozens of pots available all through the game.
Garfield: Lasagna World Tour has a few positive elements in it. Donning new hats to take on new traits is a cute idea, and some of the mechanics are fun. The glitches and poor quality however, make the rest of the game difficult to enjoy. A child who loves Garfield and needs simple game play may enjoy this game, most will not.
