Flaklypa/Pinchcliffe Grand Prix

Based on the popular Norwegian movie, Flåklypa/Pinchcliffe Grand Prix is a family game based around the world of racing. Granted I know nothing about this movie or anything else to do with this, but I liked the art style and thought I would jump in and see if this was something my son and I could enjoy playing together. While I guess you would call this a driving game, it is actually packed with mini-games and has a lot of craziness going on.

Building The Car Of Your Dreams

I have never actually seen the movie that this game is based on, but from what I understand Flåklypa/Pinchcliffe Grand Prix does follow the plot. The basics are that we have this guy called Theodor and he wants to build this car that is called the II Tempo Gigante. I guess this is a pretty iconic car if you have seen the movie. I thought the story of the game was kind of fun, but I perhaps would have appreciated it more if I was familiar with the movie before I played it.

Going With The Flow

The flow of the game I felt was pretty decent. Flåklypa/Pinchcliffe Grand Prix has you taking part in many different mini-games, taking part in races, and trying to get parts to build your car. There are 9 mini-games and they are all pretty basic, there is this letter sorting game that I thought was the best. The actual racing has a real arcade feel to it and in all what is here is super simple, but it works well enough. Again, just like following the story, I think if you were familiar with it, you would probably get more out of the game and the interactions with the characters.

DreamWorks? Is That You?

Ok, so saying that Flåklypa/Pinchcliffe Grand Prix looks like a DreamWorks movie is a huge stretch, but the “style” of the game is something that I could totally see DreamWorks doing. I think that it actually looks pretty good, I would learn that this is actually a remake of a game released in 2000 and it is a massive upgrade. I think the game has a lot of charm and the racing stuff, in particular, looks very decent. The mini-games each have their own style too and granted some are more basic than others, but everything here is colorful and designed well enough so I have no complaints. I know that my youngest son found the game pretty interesting just based on the way the racing sections looked.

Ok, so I am completely ignorant to the movie and the original game that Flåklypa/Pinchcliffe Grand Prix is based on. However, as someone coming to this with no expectations what so ever I was actually more impressed than I thought I would have been.

It is getting pretty bad reviews on Steam, but from what I have seen, most of those are from people who were familiar with the original game. I say this one is worth a look if you are in the mood for something light or something to play with the kids.

Pros:

  • I thought that the story had a lot of charm to it
  • The visuals are actually pretty good
  • There are 9 mini-games to play
  • I thought the actual racing was decent

Cons:

  • Most people who played the original do not seem to be impressed
  • The whole game is very basic in terms of the gameplay
