Fire Emblem Genealogy Of The Holy War is the fourth game in the series and the second to be released on the Super Nintendo. Due to the game being released very late in the life of the SNES (the Nintendo 64 was already out) the game never saw a Western release. Instead, we have to make use of fan translations.

This Is Super Nintendo?

The first thing I have to talk about is the presentation. The Fire Emblem games always look good, but for this one, they well and truly knew what they were doing with the SNES. It even holds up well now. This is 16-bit sprite work at its very finest, I am pretty blown away by the characters in this game. Even though these are sprites, the characters each look different and you will have no trouble telling who is who. The battles use these amazing pieces of art that make things feel extra epic and amazing.

Wow This Is Dark

Unless you speak Japanese, you will have to rely on a fan translation hack. The story though is regarded as one of the best in the series. Fire Emblem Genealogy Of The Holy War is a very dark game. It has murder, betrayal and even things like sexual assault and incest referenced. Actually, this could be a reason the game was not released in the west!

This is a very deep and twisted story that has many plot threads running through it. The basics are there is a war between Grandbell and Isaac and these nations do not care who gets caught in the middle. There is far, far more to the story than that, but that is where it all starts.

The Map Is The World!

The gameplay of Fire Emblem Genealogy Of The Holy War is something that if you like turn based, tactical heavy RPGs you will fall in love with. You have 11 chapters to experience and each chapter has its own map. Each map has multiple castles that you need to conquer, but at the same time, you need to protect your own castle. This is much harder than it sounds and you feel like you need to keep a lot of plates spinning just to stay alive.

As this is a Fire Emblem game, you do also have things like leveling up, equipping stuff and of course personal relationships that you need to deal with as well. This is just such a great Fire Emblem game and one that I really do think needs an “official” kind of translation.

I really do like the Fire Emblem series, but I get it is one that you either go all-in with or find too complicated. I think that Fire Emblem Genealogy Of The Holy War is a fantastic game and had it gotten a wide release I think you could make the argument it is one of the best games on the SNES! If you can get a translation hack, be sure to have a look at this.

Final Score: 9/10

  • It is a very challenging game
  • The story is well written and has many twists and turns
  • The graphics are some of the best in an RPG on the SNES
  • Combat is complicated but fun and rewarding
  • It is way darker in terms of tone than you may be expecting

  • You need to get a patch to play it in English
  • It can be brutally hard!
