Fallout 4 VR is a fantastic move by Bethesda to introduce the series to a much-needed gameplay switch up. If you wanted to really feel like you’re stuck in a post-apocalyptic retro futuristic America filled with terrible monsters and worse people, then this is without a doubt the game you need to be looking into playing. With an updated user interface to assist in the transition to true first person, this game is not perfect, but it’s a fantastic attempt at making an open world VR game in a franchise as beloved as it is. I hope you’re ready for some radioactive fun. Let’s get into it.

Gameplay

So, much of the gameplay to this title are as you would expect. Whether you have played a VR game before or not, you’ll find it quite intuitive thanks to the updated user interface and simple gameplay design. This is a first-person shooter game set in an open world, so much of your time is spend walking around and shooting things. Of course, this is a role-playing game too, so you will be spending a lot of time talking to characters that inhabit the world as well. Thankfully, this is as simple as looking at them then shooting or clicking. It’s not as natural as Blood and Truth, but it gets you there.

When you get swarmed by some of the more numerous enemies, you are able to bash them away with your weapon which makes the ghouls manageable but still terrifying. Although the user interface is not perfect, and even has a little jank every now and again, I found this game to be incredible fun that offered hundreds of hours of gameplay. I got well and truly stuck in for hours of play at a time, and that’s when you realize that there is a different aspect to this game. When you are standing up and gunning down raiders, or bashing away radroaches, you’ll find you are actually exercising a bit. I found this game a very easy and interesting way to make sure I wasn’t sitting at my desk all day, and getting a bit of a sweat on. It’s like that Ring Fit Adventure game on the Switch.

Visuals

The visuals translate to this version of the game very well. Everything looks crisp and clean and easy to see. Seeing it all up close and personal in a way you can’t through a TV screen really added a whole other dimension that the game managed to hold up quite well. There is a lot to love about where they have gone with this rendition of Fallout and if you are a fan of VR or just want to try it out, there are a lot worse options than this.

Story

The story in this edition is the same as it is in the original release. After witnessing the atomic bombs drop, you are frozen for several hundred years as a brave new world forms outside. When your child is taken from you, you must quest across the wastelands, wreaking havoc upon all you find until they return your family to you. Its great!
