While this was released in the early 00s, it is so weird to think that Donald Trump's Real Estate Tycoon is a thing! This is a business management and city-building style of game, and while it would be so easy to just point and laugh at this game. I actually went into it, thinking it was going to be pure garbage! However, this ended up being way better than I imagined, and if you like management sims, you may find this pretty addictive, even more so if you have a dislike for Trump as you are trying to overthrow him!
Not As Weird As You May Think!
Ok, so I did say that it was weird that Donald Trump's Real Estate Tycoon was a thing, but that is only if you look at this with your 2025 eyes with Trump being the President and the controversial figure he is now. Back in the early 00s, Trump was actually very willing to license his name out. Not just with this game, but he had board and card games, not to forget his role in TV shows and various references that would pop up. Hell, he is even referenced in one of the Alvin and the Chipmunk movies.
The Top Of Trump Tower
The idea of Donald Trump's Real Estate Tycoon is that you start at the bottom, working for Trump as you make various real estate deals. There are five different cities that you will be building up your real estate profile in. The end goal of the “story” here is that you are trying to get promoted by Trump so that you end up with an office on the top floor. Once you have done this, you can enter the endgame where your mentor becomes your rival, and you try to defeat Trump and make him go bankrupt! Kind of crazy that he allowed himself to actually be beaten in a video game!
The Five Cities
The way the game works is that you have five cities in LA, New York, London, Paris, and, as this is a Trump game, Atlantic City. Donald Trump's Real Estate Tycoon, has you buying up land, and you then need to decide what you want to do with each bit of land. There are different buildings that you can build, but not only this, you can decide what specific floors will be for, be it offices, residential, or commercial. Commercial buildings may cost more to make and take longer, but they can make you much more money. Office blocks, on the other hand, are quick and easy to build, but do not make you as much money. Every so often, Trump will check in, and if you are doing well enough, he will promote you. Once you have beaten all five of the cities and built an epic real estate empire. You then get try and take down your mentor and show that you are the one who is the real, real estate mogul! Honestly, this was way more addictive than I was expecting, and while it could be slow-paced, I was invested the whole time I was playing it.
The Excitement Of Real Estate
Look, Donald Trump's Real Estate Tycoon is not the best-looking game to look at, even for 2002; this was not exactly seen as a great-looking game. In all honesty, it is a game about becoming a real estate tycoon. How exciting could it really be? Well, games like Sim City show that city builders can have a lot of personality. Still, despite not looking exciting, I did like how you could have many kinds of buildings, ranging from giant skyscrapers to a football stadium. The menu system is clean enough, and while it may not wow you, it more than gets the job done. I just wish we had an epic video game version of Donald Trump in the game. Hell, they could have had him in the SNES Sim City Bowers role, that would have been hilarious!
Honestly, Donald Trump's Real Estate Tycoon is not a bad game at all, and if you like city-building games and management sims, you will probably have fun with this and get an extra kick out of it due to it being a Trump game. This game does actually have a physical release, and it got me wondering if there is anyone out there who has a signed copy of this in their collection! What a unique piece that would be for a game room! Also, I read that there was a Nokia N Gage version of this game, but I could not find any kind of physical evidence for that.
Pros:
- This is a solid management sim game
- The city-building aspect is fun
- I found the progression system to be pretty addictive
- It is a game about President Trump!
Cons:
- If you are not a fan of Trump, you probably do not want to play this
- It is certainly not the most exciting game to look at
