Divinity: Original Sin 2 - Definitive Edition

Divinity: Original Sin surprised us with its strategic combat, free-form world where you can kill or befriend anything or anyone at your whim, challenging encounters, and multiple ways to solve quests. With Divinity: Original Sin 2, all that great stuff returns, with additional mechanics and a dedicated PvP mode for players to blow off some steam between spider slaughtering and razing peaceful NPC villages to the ground.

Co-op was sort of a footnote in the original title, where you could play with one other player. Now, up to four players can get together to take on the challenges of the world (or kill each other outright or via deception, up to and including poisoning an ally's healing potion so that they will imbibe a lethal swallow in the thick of combat). Competitive quests facilitate this, so you may be rewarded for messing with and murdering your friends.

The addition of source powers lets players build up to incredible “ultimate” abilities, so whether you want to be a burly warrior, deceptive rogue, or wily wizard, you have powerful abilities to work toward acquiring. Resources that power these abilities are scarce, so picking the optimal moment to unleash a meteor shower is a critical aspect players must weave into their tactical strategies.

All of the crazy elemental interactions return, so throwing fire on poison or electricity on water creates all kinds of chaos. Larian is adding two more attributes that can be mixed and fused with the classic combinations — blessings and curses — so you can create everything from blessed pools that impart bonuses and benefits to cursed poison clouds that asphyxiate everything in their wake.

In addition to a robust campaign experience, Divinity: Original Sin 2 adds an arena mode to the mix, where players can participate in straight-up PvP combat with the turn-based tactical system. The demo we played forced us into cookie-cutter archetypes, but the mode is expected to get a number of tweaks and options before the game launches.

The tiny arenas feature explosive barrels and source pools for charging your powerful abilities. Verticality is a critical element, and those who claim the high ground enjoy a damage boost and increased range on their attacks.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 - Definitive Edition is an adventure RPG that will make you a god.
