Dissident: Frostland Escape

A harrowing tale of human struggle that delves into the morality of extreme survival situations, Dissident: Frostland Escape is a narrative-focused survival game with an excellent plot and an even better setting. Following the steps of other successful survival games, this title manages to keep things new at every step of the way.

Featuring some difficult moral choices, Dissident: Frostland Escape is a narrative adventure that takes pride in its well-written setting and complicated plot decisions. Based on real-life stories of gulag survivors, this is just the kind of game that’s sure to be a hit among history fans and those with a weakness for slower-paced games.

Frozen Survival

Set in a forced labor camp deep in the frozen tundra, you begin the game as a prisoner dealing with the hardships of a totalitarian regime. From the very beginning, you’re presented with two clear choices: one is to endure the degrading conditions of the prisoner camp, and the other is to venture forth into the unknown and brave the wilderness.

Either option is valid for survival, but you’ll also have to think about your companions back at the camp. Will leaving them behind cause more trouble for them in the end? Or maybe the best option is to escape to tell the rest of the world about the horrors going on in your country?

These kinds of moral dilemmas are quite similar to what we saw in Papers, Please. However, while in that game you were a part of the “system,” here you’ll have to relate with the struggles of the common man living in a totalitarian hell. There are no fancy revolutions, or underground guerrilla groups, just pure, raw survival.

Keep Your Sanity

As you escape into the wild, keeping a hold of your senses becomes increasingly difficult. Loneliness and exposure to the elements slowly degrade your character’s sanity, bringing about more erratic thoughts and, ultimately, madness.

This is where classes come in. In Dissident: Frostland Escape, players will have to choose the background of their character. Classes like teachers, soldiers, artists, and politicians each come with a unique set of skills, making them more or less likely to succeed in certain survival situations.

Exploring the wilderness won’t be an easy task: each new game comes with a procedurally generated tundra, filled to the brim with new dangers that strike when you least expect them.

Serious Cartoons

One thing that stands out immediately about this game has to do with its visual style. Featuring some detailed cel-shaded graphics, the game looks exactly like it is an adaptation of some obscure graphic novel.

Things like post-processing effects and dynamic lighting make the game look amazing. While some character models may look a bit too simplistic, they add to the overall grim presentation that the developers seem to be going for.

All in all, this is an outstandingly crafted narrative experience that presents a real-life situation in a way that’s just as engrossing as some of the best films out there.
