Deathloop

One of the most highly anticipated games of next year has got to be Deathloop, the Bethesda published FPS about two rivals locked in a perpetual cycle of death. The game made its debut announcement during E3 2019 and has since appeared in showcases for next-gen consoles. Deathloop is being developed by Arkane Lyon, the same studio that brought you the critically acclaimed Dishonored series. From that fact alone you know that Deathloop isn’t going to be your typical first-person shooter game.

Trapped in a Loop

While Deathloop is still heavily under wraps when it comes to specifics of its story, we do know a few key points.

First off, it’s like Groundhog Day meaning that the same day is repeating in a weird broken record sort of time travel. Two rival assassins, Colt and Julianna, are caught in the endless cycle but there are 7 other assassins in there with them. Colt’s aim is to take out his rival and the rest of the marks before time resets or he gets killed and time resets anyway.

Guns and Powers

Deathloop’s various trailers and showcases have given us a small taste of what we can expect from the game’s arsenal. We know that there are several different guns that can be utilized by protagonist Colt. In fact, there appears to be a massive variety of firearms and explosives to aid him in his quest of stopping time from repeating itself. Weapons from sniper rifles to shotguns are all going to come in various flavors.

There’s also been a hint of abilities and powers that Colt and his foes can wield. Not much more is known about these abilities yet.

Gameplay Freedom

Arkane Lyon have been quick to establish that they want players to feel they can play Deathloop any way they want. This comes at no surprise considering Dishonored has pretty much followed the same principle. Deathloop’s variety of guns, explosives and abilities certainly suggest that this freedom will be even broader than in their past titles. In the words of the developers, “how you play is up to you.” Even a pacifist, stealth focused approach is possible, though it’s likely to be quite challenging.

The Bottom Line

Deathloop is slated for a 2021 release on current and next-gen consoles. The game has managed to garner quite a bit of buzz thanks to the Dishonored pedigree as well as the myriad of showcases. The looping day setting is one that hasn’t been utilized by FPS’s in the past so it’ll be interesting how it works with the genre.
