There is no doubt that there is a real sense of familiarity as you are playing Deadly Contagion, but despite that, I had a lot of fun with this one. I got a real kick out of what the developer was going for here and I think if you are like me and grew up with the series the game is based on, you will too. It is a bit rough around the edges, but I legit think that is by design. This is a love letter to a certain genre of games and that is something I can get right behind.

There Is Something Resident About This Evil

Look, even if you are not a massive fan of the Resident Evil games, you can clearly see that Deadly Contagion is a game that is based on the original games in the series. Actually, I say that, but I feel the setting is more like the original Resident Evil, but with the gameplay, it feels like they wanted to walk the line between something more action packed like Resident Evil 4 and one of the more puzzle based games such as Resident Evil 2 if that makes sense. If you are a fan of the Resident Evil series, you are exactly who this game is aimed at.

A Strange Mansion In The Wilderness

The plot of Deadly Contagion sees three forest rangers and an agent for a mysterious organization being tasked with checking out this strange mansion that is out in the middle of nowhere. Once you get there, you end up slit up and it is down to our hero, Marcos Nunes to save his team and find out what the hell is going on here as there are monsters and all other kinds of weird stuff happening. This is very similar to the plot of the original Resident Evil and I just love how the game is fully wearing that on its sleeve. As I said, it is like a love letter to that series and as a massive fan and as someone who played the original all the way back in his high school days of 1996, I think that is awesome.

Hello Friends

One of the things that I thought was really cool about Deadly Contagion was that this game was made by a group of friends who love the Resident Evil series. This is a passion and small indie project and it aims to be like the classics. We are talking limited inventory space, reduced saving, and a kind of jankiness to the controls. The whole game has a rather classic vibe about it, but I did like how they made it so you could play in either first or third person. To be honest, I found the third-person POV the way to go. The game has you running around killing monsters, finding items, solving basic puzzles, and just generally trying to save. If you have enjoyed the classic Resident Evil games you will certainly get a kick out of this.

Seeing Is Believing

If I came across a video of the gameplay of Deadly Contagion and someone wrote that this was some kind of canceled PlayStation 2 or even PlayStation 3 era Resident Evil game, I would have believed them. This has a very distinct kind of look about it that I would not say gives it a low budget look, but more makes it look like a game that could have come out say 15 to 20 years ago. I thought that this was fun and went with what they were trying to do, I thought the enemy designs from the zombie like dudes to the bit spiders were very fitting for what is essentially a Resident Evil tribute.

7.5

If you liked the old-school Resident Evil games, you will have fun with Deadly Contagion and truly appreciate what this group of friends are trying to do. While the game is rather rough in most places, I felt that just added to the charm. If you are not a fan of the series, you may find the rough around the edges stuff I find charming to be more off-putting. As I have said a million times already, if you like Resident Evil, especially the older games, give this a try.

Pros:

  • I love the Resident Evil roots this has
  • The story is pretty fun
  • I liked some of the monster designs
  • The game is quite easy to play through

Cons:

  • The controls are not exactly super smooth
  • It is generally quite rough around the edges in most places
