Darkest of Days

If you are thinking “what is Darkest Of Days?” you are probably not the only one. This is a rather forgotten about first person shooter that was released on PC and Xbox 360 a few years back and it is one of the more forgotten games of its generation. Look, we have had no shortage of first-person shooters over the last three decades, but I do think that the premise of Darkest Of Days is kind of cool.

We Have To Go Back, Marty!!!

The game starts you out in a battle in the American Civil War which is a cool way to start a game. All of a sudden a dude comes through a portal takes you through it and you realize that this is no normal kind of first person shooter! The idea of the story of the game is that you are taken in and made part of an organization that basically protects time.

The over-arcing story is kind of cool and I think had the writing been a tad better and the voice acting a lot better then it would have been quite epic. The game sees you going to many different time periods such as Ancient Rome, WWII, The Civil War and so on. It is a great variety and each time period does feel different and that is something I like.

Not Bad For A First Try

One thing that I find rather interesting about Darkest Of Days is that the team behind this were newbies to the world of game development. I know this sounds like a jerk thing to say, but you can tell this. I do not mean that this is a horrible game or anything like that, but as soon as you know that this is the first game of a new team much of what the game does makes sense.

It is not a bad game by any means. But it is a rather by the numbers first person shooter kind of experience. It is not that it does anything truly bad, but it never really does anything great either. The way you can use upgraded weapons in past time periods is kind of cool, but the actual shooting mechanics can sometimes feel a little off. The main area this is a problem is when you try to aim down sights, honestly, you are better just firing off from the hip as it is actually more accurate.

I know that many people may have never heard of Darkest Of Days, but if you like first person shooters and are in the mood for one with an interesting premise. I would say that you could do worse than what this game is offering. It lacks polish in pretty much every regard, but the game is harmless enough and playing through it is not exactly going to take you a ton of time so it is a decent enough distraction.

Final Score: 7/10

Pros:

  • The idea of the game is cool
  • The different time periods are cool
  • I thought the intro to the game was well done
  • It is a rather relaxing game as it is quite easy
  • Some cool weapons to use

Cons:

  • The game lacks polish in every area pretty much
  • The voice acting is pretty bad and not in a funny way

Game Reviews

How Do You fancy playing an FPS spanning over 2,000 years of history with authentic weaponry and unique level design for each period? What's that? You'd kill your own grandmother for such a game? Well put that knife away - Darkest of Days isn't worth it. Although the game has levels set during the destruction of Pompeii to the late 22nd Century, the majority takes place during a very brown American Civil War and an even more brown World War One.

This is a real shame as the premise is fantastic and the gameplay, while very basic, is enjoyable in patches. The bolt-action rifles you spend most of your time with feel satisfying and, although the level design is amateurish, there are some glimmers of potential, such as fighting in a cornfield near a dilapidated mansion and sprinting through the battle of Tannenberg's artillery barrages. Also, while the game's engine looks ropey, it simulates trench warfare and large-scale charges relatively well.

The problem is Darkest of Days simply doesn't deliver on its promises. The timeline spanning story is throwaway nonsense, with no apparent explanation for why your character is plucked from the battle of Little Big Horn and given the task of finding the scientist responsible for making time travel possible. The AI soldiers run around like Sarah Jessica Parker when you throw a crap film script at her, and at almost $30 it's twice the price it should be. Darkest of Days has some bright ideas and can be enjoyable, but it's got too many issues to recommend it.
