Crash Time IV: The Syndicate

Crash Time IV: The Syndicate is a racing, action game, that focuses on the premise of “Cops and Robbers”, which is a pretty straightforward and simple premise. Developed by DTP Entertainment, and released in November 26th, 2010, the game takes place in a huge sandbox version of Cologne. Crash Time IV: The Syndicate is a game that suffered from reviews by critics and gamers alike, for not quite hitting the mark

The Thrill of The Chase

Based upon the german television series Alarm For Cobra 11: Highway Nights, the game revolves around the concept of finding, and pursuing bad guys much like the children’s game “Cops & Robbers”. The entirety of the game is spent driving around as Semir Gerkhan and Ben Jager, cops that are tasked with taking down a criminal group known as the Syndicate.

Taking place in the city of Cologne, Synetic GmbH developer recreated over sixty miles of road and highways from the city’s metropolitan area. Consisting of forty different vehicles, players have a lot of options to choose from while traversing the game. The huge open-world ensures that the game takes a while to get through, even if the gameplay feels bloated with unnecessary things, the city is alive and well detailed.

Ready, Set, Go.

Being part of a cop duo and chasing bad guys in Germany is most of what this game is about, the progression comes through different side quests and missions which have unique ratings and demands. The classic task-based, time limits, and placement events are present here, along with placing cameras and investigating locations throughout the game.

All in all, Crash Time IV: The Syndicate, is just that you are let loose in a city filled with bad guys, and you have to get rid of it. We have no more plot developments, characters developments or any attempt at a narrative here. The absence of cutscenes and the poorly written dialogue pushes the game towards a middle-ground of cringe-worthy comedy, and sad parody. While the biggest part of this relies on the subpar script, the American English voice-acting chosen is the nail in the coffin. Crash Time IV: The Syndicate sounds neither German or well cared for, the contrast between the care given to those aspects and the graphics and maneuverability screams identity crisis.

Conclusion

Crash Time IV: The Syndicate’s strengths of nice driving, unique feeling for each car, graphics, and an amazing soundtrack, are completely lost in a nightmarish buddy-cop script. The bloated task, exploration, and surveillance take away from the hugely detailed sandbox, so carefully crafted by developers.

Game modes are very generic, and never bring anything original, for any of your racing needs - mainly the underground illegal ones - you are much better suited booting up any of the Need For Speed: Underground, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, Burnout: Paradise, or The Crew than Crash Time IV: The Syndicate. There is a good game in here somewhere, it just takes patience and a lot of compartmentalizing to experience it.

PROS:

  • Unique Car Handling
  • Huge Sandbox
  • Soundtrack

CONS:

  • Abysmal Artificial Intelligent
  • Lackluster Script
  • Comical Voice-Acting
  • Pointless Missions
  • No Cutscenes Whatsoever
