Roguelikes are undoubtedly becoming popular development choices for studios worldwide, as demonstrated by the upcoming Bing in Wonderland. You may wonder if some of these titles are being churned out for a quick buck, considering that more are starting to look like solo-developed flash games. But apparently, this particular offering comes from a Wamba Warriors series, adding to an already-established experience.
Honestly, I know nothing about the Wamba Warriors, nor do I have any particular prior insight into what Bing in Wonderland will offer. From the initial description, we're getting a roguelike game where the core combat capabilities revolve around a bouncing blob's rear end. And that's the only reason I'm now intrigued about what this game is all about.
Shake Your Booty
So instead of just telling us what Bing in Wonderland is about, the developers were confident enough to show us through a demo. They want to showcase that despite the title needing to be more visually impressive. There are plenty of exciting roguelike mechanics and fierce ass-driven combat to enjoy. What can we unpack from our first playthrough of the Bing in Wonderland demo?
First and foremost, we still need to figure out what's happening. The game is roughly translated from its original Chinese, with little dialogue that makes sense to dictate a solid narrative. So that leaves us down to judging the visuals and mechanics more than anything. Visually Bing in Wonderland looks like an early 2000s flash game; whether that was the art style intent or not, I don't know.
That leaves the combat, which, surprisingly, is the redeeming feature of the game. Despite the eye-rolling attempt at humor using Bing's butt as a weapon, the enemy encounters are intense, fluid, and entertaining. Players must use their cognitive skills to master the art of subduing the game's varied foes, with a series of arms at their disposal to assist their battles.
Because there are few translations in the game, understanding the progression system is complicated. You'll be presented with a series of cards to choose from to enhance your abilities, which make little sense. You can find some entertainment in Bing in Wonderland if you enjoy games with some well-crafter roguelike combat. Otherwise, it's hard to gauge what's going on.
Basic Butt
Bing in Wonderland gives off the idea of a cheap remake of Dead cells with a Chinese mythology flair. However, playing the game delivers an entertaining combat experience that covers up some of the more baffling aspects of the title. Roguelike enthusiasts could see some potential outside of the bland visuals and non-sensical narrative, purely from the growing challenge curve.
There could be a well-rounded title here, but there's a lot of work to be done in the translation. Suppose there's wording that can piece all the questionable elements together. In that case, we'll understand why this game is great and why we should play it. At the moment, Bing in Wonderland probably won't appeal to the masses.
