Climb into Battle Cars for a fast-and-furious fling down fantastic speedways around the world (and out of the world, as well). Strap yourself in, burn rubber, and avoid the brutal opposition.
- Fire on a boss as soon as the race begins. Some will take off like a rocket, and it may be the last time you see them.
- Turn into curves ahead of time and you'll ricochet off the walls but still be ahead of the competition.
The racing takes place against a score of other cars, located in exotic futuristic locales, like Newtroit or Meltdown. Each track is more challenging than the last. The object of the game is to clear each track by finishing two preliminary qualifying laps with qualifying times, then you'll race on against a boss car driven by some of the ugliest, meanest engine jockeys to ever get behind a wheel. If you finish the prelim laps ahead of the qualifying time, or blow enough cars off the road, you also receive cash and/or credits that enable you to pump up your car and power-up your weapons.
- Use your missiles on cars that are way ahead of you.
Weapons? Well, you can't race with the best without making a mess. Your car comes equipped with an upgradeable Disc thrower, or you can choose to throw missiles and grenades. You'll need 'em to slow down the opposition, or you'll be sitting in last place. Accessing the weapons, the accelerator, and the brake make for complicated controls and some frantic finger twisting.
The Need for Speed
Battle Cars' fast, forward-scrolling, first-person action is something like F-Zero meets caffeine, then they both meet the Road Warrior. Graphically, the cars have jazzy details, and you can pick your type of car (spiked for combat, sleek for speed, heavy for action) and your color. The boss cars have an almost BD look to them.
The sounds consist of music and a lot of tire screeching. The music is okay, futuristic heavy- metal funk, and the sound effects are standard.
Power up your weapons, then your Turbo, then your Engine, tires and shocks.
The Good, the Battle, the Ugly
This is a great game for race fans who want a change of pace from Formula-1 cars, or for driving game fans who want a little futuristic fantasy in their lives. Casual gamers might also want to check this one out just for the speed.

Buyer's Guide: A techno version of Super Mario Kart - almost. Travel from city to city challenging the regional champ and gathering cash and credits to beef up your car and weapons. Up to eight players (two at a time) can join the high-speed action.
Driver's Ed: Their fire-and-forget nature makes missiles more advantageous than the other two weapons. Use your credits to build them up first.
BATTLE CARS for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System only has two speeds: fast and way fast. Check it out, if you're up to it!
Battle Cars is a great idea. Putting together the best features of the available racers, it comes up as a top-notch cart. The control may take getting used to, but it's easy to learn. The two-player option is an added bonus. It's a great idea to be able to blast opponents. On the downside, sometimes it is hard to hit someone directly in front of you. It seems to be one of the best racing games out there. Racing fans should love this one.
Battle Cars mixes in the best of F-Zero and Mad Max to come up with a game yet to be rivaled. The many options for tuning up the car are nice, but the best aspect of the game is buying loads of helpful weaponry. The track scrolls nicely with highly detailed cities in the background, but the car jitters around too much when making high speed turns. The Boss cars in some levels are a real pain in the butt! A very challenging game!
The concept of cars blowing up other cars is tired and so is this game. This is just F-Zero with a gun and has taken no further steps to improve upon it. The graphics aren't anything special and the sound is substandard. The worst part of the game is trying to blow up opposing cars. This is very hard when your car is equipped with incapable weapons most of the time. A worn-out theme. No sir, I don't like it!
It looks like F-Zero but it just doesn't have all that good stuff. The sounds are a bit weak, but the graphics are impressive enough to keep you playing. Also, it could benefit from a better selection of weapons to use against your opponents. Some of the steering and zooming effects are a nice touch, but the sounds and graphics need a little more attention to detail in order to make this cart a top driving game.
In a future world beset by wars, pollution and anarchy, there is only one thing to quench the population's thirst for entertainment, hence the Battle Cars. Take to the tracks and arm your special race car. If you have nerves of steel, and reflexes to match, you might be able to survive. Choose to fight a friend or the computer opponent. Plenty of play options give this cart a lot of life.
Battle Cars makes extensive use of the Super NES's Mode 7 capabilities. The tracks fly by at incredible pace, and lots of racing action mix with fast and furious shooting for a real challenge. Battle Cars has plenty of techniques, depending on what track you are on, and what weapons you have. This is the sport of the future.
Battle Cars (published by Namco in 1993) is a video game for the Super NES. The game can be played by either 1 or 2 players. It is a futuristic racing game, in which the player progresses through a series of progressively harder levels, cars are equipped with missiles, grenade launchers, and sliding disks which are used to eliminate opponents.
Two players can alternate as each progresses through the levels of the 1-player game. Also they may go head-to-head in a number of race tracks.
Strap into the seat of the most heavily armored vehicles of the future and battle it out on interplanetary racecourses. The only way to take home a good share of the purse is to destroy as many cars on the track as possible. You can then use your winnings to buy more powerful engines, faster turbos, better tires, and many other options. To blow away the other battle car challengers, you must equip your car with missiles, disks, or grenades. Everything you buy can be upgraded to make the best possible car in the racing circuit.
Although you can eliminate your opponents with your weapons, you will find it is not the only way. You can jam them into the side railings of the track and make them lose their cars' side dampeners.
The game features F-Zero-like graphics, sound, and game play that is fairly easy to get used to. Get ready to tear up the streets with Namco's Battle Cars!
You have a choice of some very cool cars equipped with an assortment of battle gear and armaments. Select your vehicle, then its colors, and you will be transported to the location of the current race. There are many other planets to race in.
ONE-PLAYER RACING MODE
This mode puts the player in a futuristic racing circuit where you travel from planet to planet for intergalac-tic racing. You are constantly being challenged by cocky battle car drivers who think they can blow you away. Kill as many opponents as you possibly can and you'll earn top dollar prizes.
Go head-to-head against a friend in the split-screen, two-player simultaneous mode. This mode also lets you choose from three of the opponents' cars as well as the three already available. You will compete against each other and other battle cars will also try to slow your progress down.
