Some games are meant for everyone. A Difficult Game About Climbing is not one of those games. This is an elite action/indie game designed specifically for gamers who have near perfect gaming skills. There is no room for mercy. There is no room for imperfection. This game follows in the footsteps of many other popular rage games, such as Getting Over It, another climbing game that is absolutely merciless in its approach to frustrating gamers.
Frustrating but not Impossible
While A Difficult Game About Climbing is indeed frustrating, and will likely make you rage quit at least once, it’s not impossible. The game gives players a minor break by dividing the game using various bodies of water. If a player falls (which they inevitably will) the player only falls to that body of water. They do not have to start over from the very bottom, only at the beginning of that segment.
While this seems very fair, it doesn’t make the game any less frustrating. Gamers still fall a lot, and being unable to get past a certain spot can be maddening.
A Love/Hate Relationships
If you can’t stop playing the game yet feel your blood pressure rising at the same time, you’re not alone. The steam page for the game is filled with positive reviews filled with hate. Nearly all of the hundreds of positive reviews say something like, “10/10 I hate it!” This is a good summary of how anyone who takes on the game will feel. You will hate it. You will love it. There is no other emotion to feel.
Popular with Speed Runners
A Difficult Game About Climbing is popular with streamers because of just how frustrating it is. Many streamers enjoy trying to speedrun the game, getting through all the levels as quickly as possible. Most of the time, a run can hardly be called ‘speedy’ with how many times the player falls, but it does make for good entertainment as streamers struggle to make it to the summit.
Simple Graphics
If you noticed that A Difficult Game About Climbing also looks a lot like Getting Over It, it’s probably because nearly all of the assets used in the game were free online or through Unity. The developer, who goes by PontyPants online, admits that coding isn’t his skill and Unity did most of the work for him.
Since he used freely available assets on the internet, it’s likely many of these were shared with the game that inspired it. Don’t be fooled by the simple graphics however, the game is addictive, challenging, and completely worth a few minutes of your time.
This is a game you will love to hate. You will experience frustration, anger, and maybe even rage quit. When you finally do struggle your way to the top of the mountain and look down at all the people who failed however, you’ll have the same sense of pride as those who made it to the top of Mount Everest.
Pros:
- Elite gamers can test their skills
- Checkpoints do exist
Cons:
- Very frustrating game
