Family-friendly games are something of a dying genre these days. So too are party games, which are designed around getting a room full of people competing in a video game at the same time. Thankfully, Nintendo is still dedicated to these dying causes with Super Mario Party.
Developed by NDcube for Nintendo, Super Mario Party is the quintessential party game and the ELEVENTH entry in the Mario Party series. When a series runs this long, you just know that it brings something special every single time, and this latest entry created specifically for the Nintendo Switch utilizes all of the hybrid console’s special features.
So, if you’re looking for a game that will have you and up to three of your friends jumping for joy and howling with laughter, then here is everything you need to know about Super Mario Party!
Classic Gameplay Returns
For the first time in more than ten years, Super Mario Party takes on the classic turn-based gameplay from early Mario Party Games. All players, each with their own Joy-Con controller, will take turns moving on the game board to progress. A dice is rolled to determine how many spaces that player will move, and there are items to alter their movement.
The game board itself will also actively work for or against players as well, with special tiles that grant the player standing on them either “good luck” or “bad luck”. There are also red and blue tiles that will add or take away coins from a player’s total bank, adding an extra layer of strategy to your dice rolls. Don’t land on red tiles!
Brand-New Mechanics
To keep things feeling fresh and new, the developers have added several new mechanics to the game. Features like mini-games created to specifically make use of the Switch’s HD Rumble and motion controls, or the inventive Character Block system.
With the Character Block system, each character has its own special block die that they can roll on their turn, with unique probabilities and features of its own, such as the Mario Block’s ability of a higher chance of rolling a 3.
For the First Time in Mario Party: Online Multiplayer
Mario Party, since its very first entry, has been a game where friends and family can play together locally, or in the same room. In today’s world, those kinds of get-togethers are not always possible due to worldwide circumstances, so the developers of Super Mario Party have implemented a feature that has made every Jackbox Party Pack game a hit: online multiplayer.
Now, you don’t have to go through the logistics of getting everyone together in the same house to play a game of Super Mario Party, all you need to do is link up your Switch consoles using Nintendo Switch Online, and you’re good to go!
